How Do You Identify? – Week 3: Identity

Published on

Hey ya! Welcome to this week’s discussion: How does one determine their identity?  Today, we will be exploring how one TRULY discovers who they really are.  Our last two meetings, we talked about how society nor race are determining factors of one’s identity, contrary to popular/conditioned belief. So…if not that, then what makes us…well, us?

For those of you who are familiar with the bible, you’ve heard/read the story of creation.  For those who are not, here’s a quick run through for clarity. God, worked for six days, creating light and separating it from darkness, therefore making “day” and “night” (day 1), the sky, separating the waters above from the waters below (day 2), dry lands and vegetation separate from waters, therefore creating “earth” and “sea” (day 3), the sun, moon, and stars, as governing signs of day, night and the seasons (day 4), sea creatures (fish) and sky creatures (aka, birds–day 5), and finally, land animals and HUMANS (day 6).  On the seventh day, once all His work was complete, He rested, therefore blessing that day as the Sabbath.

With that in consideration, we humans are created [formed] by God Himself (“So God created man in His own image, in the image and likeness of God He created him; male and female He created them.” Genesis 1:27).  Therefore, if God is the creator, would it be safe to infer that our true identity lies in (and is formed by) HIM?

Hopefully the following scripture can get us closer to making this determination…

“who were born, not of blood [natural conception], nor of the will of the flesh [physical impulse], nor of the will of man [that of a natural father], but of God [that is, a divine and supernatural birth-they are born of God-spiritually transformed, renewed, sanctified].” –John 1:13

“For by Him all things were created in heaven and on earth, [things] visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities; all things were created and exist through Him [that is, by His activity] and for Him.” –Colossians 1:16

“All things were made and came into existence through Him; and without Him not even one thing was made that has come into being.” –John 1:3

“I am the Lord, I have called You (the Messiah) in righteousness [for a righteous purpose]; I will also take You by the hand and keep watch over You, And I will appoint You as a covenant to the people [Israel], As a light to the nations (Gentiles), To open the eyes of the blind, To bring out prisoners from the dungeon And those who sit in the darkness from the prison.” –Isaiah 42:6-7

“SEE WHAT an incredible quality of love the Father has shown to us, that we would [be permitted to] be named and called and counted the children of God! And so we are! For this reason the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.” –1 John 3:1

“I am the Vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in Me and I in him bears much fruit, for [otherwise] apart from Me [that is, cut off from the vital union with Me] you can do nothing,” –John 15:5

“Everyone who is called by My Name, Whom I have created for My glory, Whom I have formed, even whom I have made.” –Isaiah 43:7

“Ah Lord God! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and by Your outstretched arm! There is nothing too difficult or too wonderful for You-” –Jeremiah 32:17

If you agree and believe that God is the author and creator, what are your thoughts about the idea of identity? What is it really? And the big question…how do you feel about it?
