God Is Faithful; Why Aren’t We? – Week 1: Trusting God

Published on

Hey ya and welcome back for this weeks discussion. Today, we will be talking about how one can develop trust in God.  To start, let’s delve into what the word trust means.  Trust, by definition, is a “firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of someone or something.” Have any of you ever given thought to how much trust we actually place on things? For example, when you get into a car, you are trusting the driver [yourself if that’s you] to know how to drive, the car to function properly, other drivers on the road to drive safely, the signal lights to work as designated, pedestrians not to just jump in the street all willy nilly, amongst a plethora of other things.  That one activity alone requires trust in several different things which we actually have no control over.

However, when people [who are still in the world] are now faced with having to put the same amount of trust in GOD, they struggle with relinquishing the false sense of control they’ve created in their mind.  Follow me for a second…Think of being in the car again. “I know how I [or this person] drive(s)…I know the car I’m getting into works just fine…I know that there aren’t many drivers on this road…I know that the signal lights work…I know that this road doesn’t have much foot traffic…”  “I know” creates a false sense of control because you are relying on YOUR OWN understanding of how things work or function.  You have created this sense of security based on your experiences.  Now, imagine never having an experience with God, and being told to just trust in Him.  It can be difficult because you are basically putting your trust in something you’ve never experienced, never encountered, and have never truly understood the power of.  It seems almost counter intuitive to how we are conditioned because it’s not something palpable to us.

For this reason, it is extremely important to read the scripture.  By immersing yourself in the word, you are creating space for a personal experience with God. An encounter that can now become palpable and discernible, therefore, lending room for trust in His majesty.  If you have a hardened heart, or a closed off mind, it is extremely challenging to lend yourself to God’s greatness, because you are relying solely on your understanding, which is not like His understanding [Isaiah 55:9].  Walking in agreement with the Lord is not just an overnight thing. The only way to truly form a relationship of faith and trust with God, is by hearing the word [Romans 10:17], so that we may be transformed and no longer conformed to the beliefs of this world [Romans 12:2].  By incorporating this practice into your daily life, the “I knows” of the regular world, now become “I know GOD will, I know GOD can, I know GOD is able and I know GOD is in control.”

“So faith comes from hearing [what is told], and what is heard comes by the [preaching of the] message concerning Christ.” -Romans 10:17

“And do not be conformed to this world [any longer with its superficial values and customs], but be transformed and progressively changed [as you mature spiritually] by the renewing of your mind [focusing on godly values and ethical attitudes], so that you may prove [for yourself] what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His plan and purpose for you].” -Romans 12:2

“For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways And My thoughts higher than your thoughts.” -Isaiah 55:9

“Trust in and rely confidently on the Lord with all your heart And do not rely on your own insight or understanding. In all your ways know and acknowledge and recognize Him, And He will make your paths straight and smooth [removing obstacles that block your way].” -Proverbs 3:5-6

“God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do it? Or has He spoken and will He not make it good and fulfill it?” -Numbers 23:19

“I am convinced and confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will [continue to] perfect and complete it until the day of Christ Jesus [the time of His return].” -Philippians 1:6

“‘For I know the plans and thoughts that I have for you,’ says the Lord, ‘plans for peace and well-being and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” -Jeremiah 29:11

“After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace [who imparts His blessing and favor], who called you to His own eternal glory in Christ, will Himself complete, confirm, strengthen, and establish you [making you what you ought to be].” -1 Peter 5:10
