Out With The OLD, In With The NEW – Week 3: Yielding New Fruit Pt. 2

Published on

Hey ya, welcome and glad you’re back! Last week on, “Out with the OLD, in with the NEW,” we spoke about the fruits of the spirit, how we attain them and what they mean, with our focus being on the first 4 fruit (love, joy, peace & patience). During this discussion, we will focus on the meaning of the second 4 fruits mentioned: Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness & Gentleness.

As a refresher, below is the scripture we used for reference, where Apostle Paul first introduces the fruits of the spirit:

“But the fruit of the Spirit [the result of His presence within us] is love [unselfish concern for others], joy,  [inner] peace, patience [not the ability to wait, but how we act while waiting], kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such things there is no law.” -Galatians 5:22-23

  • Kindness, is an act of compassion towards others, showing a genuine concern for their well-being and displaying the willingness to serve them without expecting anything in return.  Kindness is an action, not just tolerance of others, superficial politeness, or pleasantries.  It is rooted in genuinely caring about another’s feelings and emotions, putting them before and above your own, even when the person is difficult, may not deserve it, or does not appreciate it.
    • “Be kind and helpful to one another, tender-hearted [compassionate, understanding], forgiving one another [readily and freely], just as God in Christ also forgave you.” Ephesians 4:32
  • Goodness, is an uprightness of heart, choosing to do what is right instead of what is evil. Goodness can be described as having integrity, being morally upstanding, having decency and being honorable.
    • “Do not be overcome and conquered by evil, but overcome evil with good.” Romans 12:21
  • Faithfulness, is a commitment of loyalty and trustworthiness to God and others. It means honoring one’s promises and obligations, and keeping your faith, even in moments of adversity.
    • “In this case, moreover, it is required [as essential and demanded] of stewards that one be found faithful and trustworthy.” 1 Corinthians 4:2
  • Gentleness, is described as one who embodies patience, kindness and self-control. It is considered a virtue often linked to meekness, humility and a willingness to accept correction.
    • “but let it be [the inner beauty of] the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality and unfading charm of a gentle and peaceful spirit, [one that is calm and self-controlled, not overanxious, but serene and spiritually mature] which is very precious in the sight of God.” 1 Peter 3:4

Living in agreement with the Holy Spirit is not for the faint of heart. It can be difficult and challenging at times, requiring a higher level of patience, resiliency and perseverance.  However, when you choose to walk in God’s light, He will equip you with the things you need to be successful in your walk.
